The prices were right and the space was available. They continued to fan out across the area through the 1990s, despite the lagging economy, simply because of a lack of space elsewhere. Then, they started to grow in scope. Instead of 200,000-square-foot warehouses, they mushroomed to 300,000 and 400,000 square feet. More sophisticated technology meant larger warehouses moving more goods faster, some projects growing to more than a million square feet. “Every facility of 500,000 square feet and above was taken” in 2010 … chief economist for the Inland Empire Economic Center. … But with that development came conflict and health concerns. The community foundation invested $4.68 million in the three counties in 2011.
"There continues to be a lot of commitment from citizens to help their neighbors and the community," said David Pamperin, president of the community foundation.
"People make donations to the community foundation because the donation, no matter what its size, continues to grow in a community endowment for years, providing annual grants to support numerous causes."
The foundation managed 454 funds during the fiscal year, which ended June 30, including 25 new funds. Ninety-nine cents out of every dollar spent in the year went to a charitable cause, according to the foundation.

A study released last week by the Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University concluded the metropolitan area will add 1 million net new jobs during the next 20 years. Fairfax, Loudoun and Montgomery counties and Washington are expected to account for more than 60 percent of the region's job growth during the next 20 years, according to the study.
Meanwhile, the metro area will need to add nearly 2 million replacement workers to fill jobs vacated by retirees and others leaving their jobs in the area for various reasons.
"The ability to absorb these new workers into the region and to ensure robust regional economic growth depends critically on providing a sufficient amount of housing of the right types and prices and in the right places," the report reads.

More than 20% of all trips in the region are made by bicycle or on foot, yet, even with the new funding in this plan, the region still only spends 1.3% of its transportation dollars to make those trips easier and safer. We don’t think that’s enough. And voters agree. As I blogged earlier this week, voters overwhelmingly support increased funding for safe bicycle and pedestrian facilities. In fact, if it were up to them, 14% of transportation funds would go to biking and walking—that’s a lot more than the current 1.3%.
