http://www.pe.com/local-news/reports/raising_the_grade/Part_Four/20111102-region-education-is-an-economic-development-project.eceInland business leaders want to forge a strong partnership among the region’s industries, schools and colleges to produce an educated workforce and eventually improve the quality of life in the region.
They are developing a plan to invigorate that partnership by working with high schools, community colleges and universities to adjust their curriculums to account for the needs of local industries. Doing so, they say, will help produce more employable graduates who can, in turn, bolster the region’s economy by working in the Inland region.
The movement is in its infancy but the shift is essential, they say. - 02 nov 2011

We’re doing this anecdotally,” said Sam Williams, president of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. The forum was an affirmation of the idea of a mega-region collaboration, …Now comes the hard work of making it happen. … - 02 nov 2011
http://www.tampabay.com/news/business/corporate/community-reacts-as-st-petersburg-times-changes-name-to-tampa-bay-times/1199598The decision to change the name of the St. Petersburg Times to Tampa Bay Times was met with enthusiasm and derision, with hope over a region-unifying moniker and regret over the end of an era. After announcing the news in a front-page story Tuesday, Times chairman and CEO Paul Tash said he personally received about three dozen responses via phone and e-mail, most of them positive."They clearly understand the business reasons and are very supportive of having a Tampa Bay regional identity," he said. Some Times alumni who contacted him were "both wistful and supportive."Many e-mails to the paper and comments attached to an online version of the story were negative. But even there, Tash saw a bright spot."The essential objections are rooted in affection for St. Petersburg and a sense that the newspaper matters," he said. … Here's a sampling of reader and community feedback - 02 nov 2011
http://www.tampabay.com/news/business/corporate/st-petersburg-times-changing-its-name-to-tampa-bay-times/1199486Jan. 1, this newspaper will become the Tampa Bay Times. The new name reflects the growth of our newspaper and our vision for this region. …Three-fourths of …readers live outside St. Petersburg. …Throughout the Tampa Bay region, people feel such attachment to their own communities …The Times' commitment to local communities will not change with the new name. But like other citizens and civic leaders, we recognize that all our communities have a stronger future as part of a dynamic Tampa Bay region, rather than a constellation of towns and cities jockeying for advantage against each other. The power of our collective identity is clear. In 1990, when Major League Baseball was preparing to put an expansion team in Florida, forces in Orlando set out to steal the day. …Orlando was competing not against St. Petersburg, but all of Tampa Bay. …The Times has long supported our region's assets …Now we are putting our own greatest asset — our good name — toward the future of the Tampa Bay region - 01 nov 2011

Those are among the promising findings of Megapolitan America: A New Vision for Understanding America's Metropolitan Geography, … by Dr. Arthur C. Nelson, FAICP, … and Dr. Robert E. Lang, professor at the University of Nevada — Las Vegas, …
Megapolitan America is a new way of looking at the changing face of the USA. It is the first comprehensive book on the full extent and importance of U.S. megapolitan regions based on 2010 census data and proprietary analysis.
The authors say that "the sooner the United States recognizes it has evolved into a nation of 20-some very densely settled economic engines, the better able it will be to sustain long-term economic development to mid-century and beyond." - 01 nov 2011

http://www.census.gov/population/metro/Metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas (metro and micro areas) are geographic entities defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for use by Federal statistical agencies in collecting, tabulating, and publishing Federal statistics. The term "Core Based Statistical Area" (CBSA) is a collective term for both metro and micro areas. A metro area contains a core urban area of 50,000 or more population, and a micro area contains an urban core of at least 10,000 (but less than 50,000) population. Each metro or micro area consists of one or more counties and includes the counties containing the core urban area, as well as any adjacent counties that have a high degree of social and economic integration (as measured by commuting to work) with the urban core.
